A message from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse

Sheldon Whitehouse A message from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse

By Flannery Winchester

As CCL volunteers nationwide continue to advocate for a price on carbon, we’ve received an informative, appreciative message from one of the Senate’s leading climate hawks, Sheldon Whitehouse.

In a video shared with us this week, Sen. Whitehouse says, “I want to start by saying thank you to Citizens’ Climate Lobby for the wonderful, really astonishing work that you’ve done to help us solve our climate crisis.”

Watch Sen. Whitehouse’s full message here:

Sen. Whitehouse continues, “Here in Washington, we are close to putting together the most comprehensive piece of climate legislation Congress has ever seen. We’re going to have to do it in the Senate through the reconciliation process, which means we’ll have to get all 50 Democrats on board and perhaps get the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris to put us over the top, but we have a real great chance to do it.

“President Biden began with a wonderful program, and we’ve added to it since then the methane fee, which instantly became the third most impactful climate intervention in the array of climate interventions that the Biden administration is supporting. And we’re working to refine and define the border adjustment so that carbon pricing doesn’t set one country against another unfairly, and we can protect American manufacturing and interests. And at the end of the day, my goal is to make sure that our combined plan includes a real price on carbon that will really drive down carbon emissions and set a standard for America to lead the world when we hit Glasgow in November.

“None of this would be possible without the energy of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. I’m really proud of the work that you’ve done, and I thank you.”
