Inclusive Climate Action at CCL

We’re Building a Diverse Climate Movement

Including and empowering voices from all communities

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a nonpartisan grassroots organization strengthened by including and elevating all voices. With 500+ local chapters across the country, it only makes sense that our demographics represent and celebrate America’s diversity.

This representation includes populations in the United States most impacted by the climate crisis, particularly frontline communities. We actively work to seek out, include and amplify voices and solutions from these communities in our local chapter work.

CCL volunteers build momentum for change through activities like:

  • Meeting with Congressional leaders
  • Writing letters to the editors and op-eds
  • Meeting with local media
  • Educating your community about global warming and legislative solutions
  • Participating in chapter and volunteer development

We welcome you to join us and begin working toward climate solutions in your community. Fill out the form and let’s get started.

Our Diversity Core Value:

“We empower everyone in exercising their personal and political power regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, ability, socioeconomic factors or political affiliation. We continue to bring awareness of important issues to all our volunteers and foster a sense of belonging to our organization.”

Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Perspective

Climate change is a public health issue. Maintaining the current status quo will continue to pollute our air, prematurely killing 70,000 Americans per year. This threat to public health is current, ongoing and must be addressed.

The effects of pollution and environmental degradation fall most heavily on frontline communities that are marginalized in our society, especially Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. There is a legacy of racially biased policies that have created and perpetuated this imbalance

We cannot wait to transition off fossil fuels when people in these communities are dying from the worst effects of climate change. Things will only get worse if we don’t eliminate harmful emissions.

There is no cure-all solution to the environmental justice problems we face. To make progress, we work together to prioritize people over business and the economy, starting with local solutions and conversations.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby believes in the dignity of every person and that all of us should have access to clean water, clean air, and healthy food. These disparities must be addressed while we transition to a zero emissions economy.

We value unique, local perspectives. We trust that volunteers who live and work in their communities are the ones who best understand how to take action with a grassroots approach. Our volunteers work to to promote diversity, equity and inclusion while making space for big discussions that incorporate the views of those most harmed by the climate crisis.

On a national level, we maintain a full-time, in-house Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) staff who work to provide programming, coordinate action teams and determine how to best recognize and uplift the environmental justice perspective within our efforts.

Meet Some of Our Volunteers

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization. Our supporters are organized into local chapters which reflect the character and politics of where they are located. Each Chapter works with their members of Congress to enact climate change solutions.

Citizen’s Climate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Programming

Some of our current national Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)-related initiatives include:

  • Inclusion programming
  • Diversity scholarships for volunteers to attend our annual conference
  • Youth Outreach and Engagement
  • Conservative Outreach

Learn more information about our national DEI programming.

On a local level, chapters are encouraged and supported in their DEI initiatives. Activities vary by chapter, but volunteers everywhere uphold diversity as a core value.

On a national level, we offer the following programs. Follow us on Twitter at @ccl_inclusion for program scheduling.

Race and Culture Conversations

In 2021, we are launching two new internal programs that focus on overall education of all CCL volunteers and staff. One program is our Race and Culture Conversations, which began in 2020. These were led monthly by the Diversity & Inclusion Director and our Director of Programs. The goal of the program is to focus on the intersectionality of race, culture, and climate as members of CCL. This program is now being offered quarterly.

CCL Spanish Language Information Session

We also offer a quarterly informational session offered in Spanish to share the goals and work of the organization with potential volunteers and members of different communities across the United States.

Action Teams

CCL has more than 65 action teams where volunteers with the same interests can engage with others outside their local chapter. The Inclusion Action Teams work closely with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion staff members and were created in response to our volunteers’ interests. They are as follows:

  • Asian Pacific
  • Climate and Culture
  • Differently ABLED
  • Latinos
  • LGBTQIA+ and Allies OUTreach
  • Listening to Indigenous Voices
  • People of the Global Majority (group for BIPOC support only)

We also empower our chapter volunteers to learn about different diversity and inclusion efforts. Beyond individual chapters, we work with CCL’s Regional Community Ambassadors and Diversity & Inclusion Fellows to help in our local and regional community-building efforts.
