Former Congressman Inglis joins CCE board
OCT. 15, 2019 — Citizens’ Climate Education is pleased to announce that climate solutions champion and former Republican Congressman Bob Inglis has joined CCE’s governing board.
In 2009, Inglis introduced the Raise Wages, Cut Carbon Act, legislation that would have taxed carbon emissions and used the revenue to reduce payroll taxes. Since leaving Congress in 2011, he founded and became the executive director of republicEn.org, a nonprofit dedicated to building support among conservatives for a revenue-neutral price on carbon.
“Ever since I first met Marshall Saunders, I’ve been a huge fan of CCE — of its beautiful, collaborative spirit; of its amazingly engaged volunteers; of its infectious optimism; of its kindness. I hope that I can help further those things as we work together to solve climate change,” said Inglis.
Inglis served in the U.S. Congress from 1993 to 1999 and again from 2005-2011, a Republican representing Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina. For his work on climate change, Inglis was given the 2015 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. He appears in the film Merchants of Doubt, in the Showtime series Years of Living Dangerously (episodes 3 and 4), and has given TED Talks on political courage and on his metamorphosis on climate change.
“Bob was ahead of time when he introduced his carbon-pricing legislation a decade ago,” said CCE Executive Director Mark Reynolds. “Since then, he’s dedicated his time and energy to bringing Republicans around on the need to deal with climate change by employing market-based solutions. As an organization that emphasizes a bipartisan approach to dealing with climate change, CCE is thrilled to have Bob’s voice on the board as we continue working to bring Republicans and Democrats together on this critical issue.”
Inglis was already on the advisory board of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, the political action sister organization of CCE. In joining the CCE governing board, he will now help make decisions about the policy and direction of the organization.
Citizens’ Climate Education is a nonpartisan grassroots advocacy organization that empowers individuals to educate key stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public about effective solutions to climate change. By training and mobilizing a powerful coalition of climate advocates, CCE builds political will for long-lasting climate solutions.
