FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dec. 9, 2021 – Citizens’ Climate Education is honored to receive a 2021-2022 Climate Smart Commitment grant from Rick Steves’ Europe.

“We extend our gratitude to Rick Steves’ Europe for providing grant support to Citizens’ Climate Education for the third year consecutively,” said Lynate Pettengill, Senior Development Director of Citizens’ Climate Education/Citizens’ Climate Lobby. “These funds allow us to empower everyday citizens to engage in the legislative process to advance effective climate solutions.”

In 2021, Citizens’ Climate Lobby supporters from all across the U.S. generated 162,083 messages and 48,953 calls to congressional offices, pushing for major climate action. Training and resources from Citizens’ Climate Education empowered and equipped those supporters to take action.

Our supporters also held hundreds of local outreach events and generated thousands of letters and op-eds in their local newspapers, educating their communities about climate change and climate solutions.

Rick Steves tweeted, “I’m overjoyed to once again be putting 11 checks totaling $500,000 in the mail — all going to nonprofits that fight climate change through on-the-ground work in the developing world and advocacy in Congress.” See the full portfolio here.

Rick Steves’ Europe’s Climate Smart Commitment is not only reshaping travel, but paving the way to a more sustainable future. Their website states, “We believe that international travel is a powerful way to better understand and contribute to the world we live in. But every international flight emits damaging carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to the climate crisis.”

That’s why the organization has made its Climate Smart Commitment, described as a self-imposed carbon tax. Their goal is “to pay our fair share of the environmental cost that our travelers incur, and to do so in a way that empowers communities throughout the developing world.”
