The 2020 elections will shape our political strategy
The will to solve climate change is growing. 2021 could present historic opportunities for climate solutions, and CCL is preparing to move forward. At this conference, we’ll take a look at the road ahead. John Wood and Hahrie Han will discuss what the 2020 Presidential and Congressional election results mean for climate policy in 2021. And CCL’s Dr. Danny Richter will share key elements of CCL’s 2021 strategy based on the election.
We’ll stay true to our roots
Some things will remain the same no matter what the election outcomes are. We’ll continue our nonpartisan, grassroots approach. We’ll still build the relationships that turn enemies into allies, and allies into activists. At the conference, you’ll have an opportunity to hear about the work we do to reach out to, include and support all different types of people to reach their potential as climate advocates.
And build on our past successes
As we discuss the road ahead, it’s important for us to review what’s worked so far, and to build on those successes. 2020 has been a difficult year, but there have been bright spots as we transformed our advocacy from in-person to digital. CCLers will share highlights and best practices from their work this year.
Featuring remarks from:

Hahrie Han
Hahrie Han is the Inaugural Director of the SNF Agora Institute, a Professor of Political Science, and Faculty Director of the P3 Research Lab at Johns Hopkins University. She specializes in the study of organizing, movements, civic engagement, and democracy. She is the author of four books, and her award-winning work has been published in the American Political Science Review, American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and numerous other outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and elsewhere.

John Wood, Jr.
John Wood, Jr.’s work has focused on creating dialogue and understanding between polarized communities. In 2014 he was California’s youngest active nominee for congress, and his campaign was notable for its nonpartisan focus and its emphasis on cultivating collaboration across political and racial divides. Wood was elected Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County, a position he held from January 2015 – June 2016. He now serves as an Advisor to the American Project and is the Director of Public Outreach at Braver Angels.

Shi-Ling Hsu
Dr. Shi-Ling Hsu is the D’Alemberte Professor of Law at the Florida State University College of Law. He teaches and writes in the areas of environmental and natural resource law, climate change, law and economics, and property. He has published in a wide variety of journals and is the author of “The Case for a Carbon Tax: Getting Past our Hang-ups to Effective Climate Policy,” and co-author of the textbook “Ocean and Coastal Resources Law.” He is also the author of the forthcoming book, “Capitalism and the Environment: A Proposal to Save the Planet.”

Lastly, for 45 minutes, Adeline DeYoung, CCL Government Affairs Coordinator, Taylor Krause, CCL National Partnerships and Coalitions Coordinator, and Morgan McCue, CCL Project Coordinator, will review the outcome of CCL’s analysis of the June 2020 Lobby Day notes.
2. Bridging the Divide on Climate Solutions presented by Braver Angels (2 hours) [limited capacity – currently full] We will be holding this workshop again January 30th, you can register here.
While most Americans understand that climate change is real, they disagree about how to solve it. Some seek solutions that maintain the status quo, while others believe that the problem requires major systemic changes. Many agree that the topic is polarizing. Bridging the Divide on Climate Solutions, a Braver Angels workshop designed in collaboration with Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), teaches communication skills that will allow people to talk more constructively with each other about solutions to climate change.
3. A lens into race and climate (2 hours) [limited capacity – currently full]
How do White and BIPOC individuals move beyond diversity to talk about race issues at a climate organization? Gain tools and practices for counteracting racial bias and microaggressions to help create a more compassionate and inclusive organization. This session will be led by Natalie Orozco, Strategic Consultant & CCL Board member, Karina Ramirez, Diversity and Inclusion Director, Don Addu, CCL Program Director, and Shelley Buonaiuto, CCL Tornadoes Region Community Representative.
4. Envisioning Climate Success and Your Next Steps (2 hours) [limited capacity – currently full]
Through a series of thought exercises, an interactive multimedia presentation, and small group discussions, Peterson Toscano, host of Citizens Climate Radio, will help you to more deeply appreciate your unique life experiences and connect your past to concrete next steps into the future. Through a mind-expanding time-travel exercise, you will free up your imagination and consider new solutions.
