Thank your Senator for the Inflation Reduction Act

YOU DID IT!

The Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act. 🎉

You called, emailed, wrote letters, and Tweeted for months. And, the Senate PASSED THE BILL. Now the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes the biggest climate provisions in US History, is off to the House for a vote. Thank you, Senators!

What should I say when I call?

Thank your Senator for stepping up on climate and voting for the Inflation Reduction Act. That’s it. Don’t be afraid to gush a bit. This bill is a huge step forward on climate change, and there’s no better way to show your appreciation than with a call.

What if my Senator is a Republican?

We are only calling Democratic Senators because Republicans were not involved in budget reconciliation. If you have only Republican Senators but a Democratic Representative, make sure to call your Representative to ask them to support this bill. If all your members of Congress are Republicans, help spread the good news about this bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this moment so important?

Democrats in Congress have been negotiating a budget reconciliation bill since early 2021, and this bill has long been understood as the vehicle for major climate policy in this Congress. The negotiations have gone through many twists and turns — but we’re finally at the finish line. The Senate has passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which will now be taken up in the House. The policies they have agreed on will be the biggest action Congress has ever taken to address climate. Let’s call our Democratic Representatives to urge them to vote “yes” on this major climate bill.

What happens if the House passes this bill?

Even though the House passed its own version of the reconciliation bill in 2021, it will need to vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains different policies. Once it passes the House, the bill will go to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.

What’s included in the Inflation Reduction Act?

The Inflation Reduction Act includes many climate provisions. If it passes, it will be the biggest Congressional action on climate ever. It includes tax credits that will make our energy cleaner and more affordable for Americans. It also includes a methane pollution fee.

What can people in Republican states and districts do to support this bill?

Although the Inflation Reduction Act includes many provisions that enjoy bipartisan support, only Democratic Representatives are expected to vote for it. Because of that, we are not calling or writing Republican Representatives about this bill. If you live in a red district, you can help by spreading the word to friends and family in blue districts.

What is budget reconciliation, anyway?

Budget reconciliation is a process where adjustments to spending and revenue can be made with 51 Senate votes instead of the full 60 votes. The rules of what can be included in a budget reconciliation are strict and governed by a nonpartisan Senate parliamentarian.

Is this bill the same as Build Back Better?

Build Back Better is the name of the bill that the House passed through budget reconciliation in 2021. The Senate has negotiated its own bill, which is not the same package. The Senate’s version is officially named the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

What else can I do?

You only need to call or write your Democratic Representative once. Then, share this page with any friends, family and coworkers who live in blue districts, and want to see Congress take major climate action.
