Jonathan Marshall is a journalist, scholar, and book author with economics training from Stanford University and a Master’s Degree in American History from Cornell University. He served as Economics Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle for eight years and as editorial writer and Editorial Page Editor of the San Jose Mercury News and Oakland Tribune. He began writing about climate and energy economics for national publications, including the New York Times, in the 1990s. He also handled communications related to renewable energy and clean technology for Pacific Gas and Electric Co., the nation’s largest combined gas and electric utility, for several years.

Jonathan began volunteering with CCL’s Marin County chapter in 2017 and co-founded CCL’s Economics Policy Network. Since then he has published op-ed columns in all major Bay Area newspapers and the Boston Globe, as well as CCL research summaries dealing with carbon taxes and innovation, regulation, transportation, international implementation, economic justice, and other topics. He has presented to numerous groups locally and nationally. Jonathan joined CCL’s staff in 2022.

When he’s not nerding out, Jonathan loves to hike throughout the Bay Area, watch streaming shows, and read fiction.
